Match Report

Despite two excellent goals from Ian Watt this defeat for Rovers can only be put down to a very costly night with an injury to Captain Stevie Murray and an ordering off for Wullie Souter being the low points.

Carluke had the unusual situation of going a goal down in this match early on when Wishaw scored in the 4th min after a break down the right and a low cut back to the back post that was prodded home for 1-0 to the home side a goal that saw Rovers behind for the first time this season.

Rovers reply was good to the loss of this goal and Ryan Smillie forced a corner in 6 mins but an effort from Watt from this was just past the post. The same player was unlucky in the 11th min as well when an low effort went right across goal before going out for a goal kick.

Rovers already difficult cause was made even harder in the 20th min when Souter was ordered off for squaring up to the Wishaw centre forward who looked to completely over react to the situation.

Despite this ordering off Rovers got back in to the match a minute later when they won a corner which was put straight in to the net by Watt after Murray created space at the front post.

Rovers had another set back in the 30th min when Murray was forced off with a stomach injury meaning that Mark Haddow had to fill in at centre half but they still had the next chance in the match when Jonny Wilson set Gordon Murphy clear and his cross was met by Watt but his effort was just over the Wishaw bar.

The last action of the half saw Rovers Keeper Stewart Thomson bring off an excellent save at the expense of a corner to give a half time score of Wishaw FC 1 v 1 Carluke Rovers.

The second half saw Rovers start well despite a man less and they created a golden chance in 49 mins when Jamie Dickson’s good work on the right led to an excellent cross that brought out an equally good header from Murphy but unfortunately for Carluke it came crashing off the bar before being cleared.

Carluke relied heavily on Thomson in goal from this point as he brought off a string of good saves as Wishaw tried to get back in front but even he was beaten in the 70th min when a cross cum shot looped in to the Rovers net for 2-1 to the home side, the task for Rovers was made even harder in the 73rd min when a low cross from the left for Wishaw was put in to his own net by Dickson for what looked to be an unassailable 3-1 lead.

Rovers got a bit of hope in 77 mins when they were awarded a free kick 25 yards out and another top drawer finish from Watt sailed in to the net for 3-2.

The last part of the match saw the action flow from end to end with Rovers keeper Thomson bringing off another good save from a free kick in 84 mins before Rovers Smillie was upended on the edge of the penalty area in 85 mins, a challenge that saw Wishaw reduced to 10 men as well, but the free kick came to nothing and the game petered out to a 3-2 home win that sees Wishaw favourites now to win the group .
