Match Report

What a performance against all the odds from Carluke Rovers today to outgun their opponents of two divisions higher despite playing 87 mins of the match with only 10 men after the dismissal of Mark Weir in the 7th min for a reckless challenge.

The only thing of interest in the early part of the match was in fact the red card dished out to Weir who had over run the ball in the middle of the park and caught his opponent with a reckless challenge as he tried to regain possession that probably should have earned a yellow card but in fact got him a red and put his team up against it right away.

The match took a long while to come to life after this and the first chance for either side fell to Carluke when a good ball in to Ian Watt allowed him a shot but the effort was high of the Vics bar after 23 mins.

This spurred the game in to life and Irvine produced the next chance when from a free kick their centre forward Adam saw a net bound header superbly saved by Dan Tobin in the Rovers goal at the expense of a corner. When this was played in the same player saw an effort go just over the Rovers bar.

With the game opening up Greg Fernie set Watt free in the 27th min but his effort was just wide of the post as another chance went a-begging, seconds later however Carluke did take the lead when an excellent ball from Mark Haddow found Watt and his perfect first touch took out his marker before he curled a great shot wide of the Vics keeper for 1-0 to the ten man Rovers.

With the half drawing to a close the home side got a chance when Carluke were looking for a free kick that did not come and Vics broke on the left before Bolton saw his effort well blocked by Rovers keeper Tobin.

Half time Irvine Vics 0 v 1 Carluke Rovers.

The second half saw the home side start well and it took a great block from Reece Lowdon to prevent them levelling in the 47th min.

Carluke were by now hitting on the break only and they set Watt free on the right in 56 mins but his ball across goal found no takers.

The home side were on top at this point and in 59 mins another ball to the Rovers back post saw a good header well saved by Tobin but the ball broke kindly for Vics and Tobin had to produce another stop before the ball was cleared by Jordan Duncan.

Vics had all the play for a good spell in this second half and produced a couple of chances when Scaramuzza had a shot deflected that Tobin did well to touch over in 61 mins then in 68 mins the same player had a net bound effort deflected away by John Renwick for another corner that again came to nothing.

On 71 mins the home side had another chance when Davidson saw his shot hit the outside of Tobins post, the equaliser was coming though and in the next attack Vics drew level when a long ball saw Adam beat Tobin with a low finish for 1-1.

Rovers dug deep now and kept looking for an opportunity to get a winner rather than settle for the draw with Haddow setting Watt free on the left in 76 mins but a weak finish saw a comfortable save for Lamb in the home goal.

The visitors did however grab the winning goal in the 85th min when a great ball forward from Chick McCole found Watt who beat his marker before rounding the keeper who had raced out of his box, the striker was forced wide but a superb left foot finish from a tight angle found the Vics net for 2-1 to Carluke.

This goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of the home side and the final chance of the match also fell to Carluke when Jonny Wilson was through but a low left foot shot was wide of target.

This was a great performance full of the hard work and effort that was lacking from Carluke a few weeks ago and sees them with three wins in a row and a place in the last 32 of the Scottish in January.

Rovers team.
