Match Report

Carluke clawed and battled their way into the third round of the West of Scotland Cup despite missing four first team players with Biggart and Lindsay unavailable and Larkin and Pettigrew both Cup tied as they faced fellow league two incumbents Muirkirk Juniors.

The entire game was littered with a multitude of missed chances by both teams misfiring front men with the visitors creating the best scoring opportunities during the opening twenty minutes of a fiesty encounter.

Luckily for Rovers their keeper Dave Cherrie was in fine form pulling off a trio of top class saves to keep the home side in the game.

Rovers weathered the initial storm and after twenty minutes a thirty yard Weir free kick was saved by the visitors keeper who kicked upfield straight to the feet of their striker who found himself one on one with Cherrie who read the placement kick perfectly diving low to his right to turn the ball round the post.

From the corner the ball was floated to the back post where Cherrie tipped the ball over the bar from an unchallenged header.

Two minutes later with the Rovers defence looking ragged and disjointed Cherrie again pulled off a fine save from a one on one situation as he stood tall to gather a straight shot into his abdomen from point blank range.

On twenty four minutes Haley raced into the box from a finely threaded Weir through ball only for the keeper to force him wide with the lay off pass to Grierson narrowly flying over the bar.

Seconds later Haley again found himself one on one with the keeper and unselfishly squared the ball to Lafferty who shot straight into the keepers hands.

Rovers breathed a sigh of relief on twenty six minutes when Haley and Lafferty combined on the left edge of the box with Lafferty curling his shot into the far corner of the net.

Rovers went two ahead on the half hour when Haley was hauled down inside the box and Weir placed the penalty in the bottom left corner of the net.

The visitors then deployed rough house tactics interrupting the positive flow of Rovers control of the game with four Muirkirk players being shown yellow cards in the space of ninety seconds for late and dangerous challenges.

Just before half time the visitors pulled a goal back from a thirty yard free kick which trundled through a ruck of players into the net.

Half Time Rovers 2 Muirkirk 1

Within five minutes of the restart Rovers missed two guilt edged chances when Lafferty then Haley both lacked composure when one on one with only the keeper to beat.

On the hour mark Haley then Conor McDonald both missed chances with the goal at their mercy.

Muirkirk equalised ten minutes from time when Rovers played too many short passes out of defence and an interception allowed the visitors striker to run in on goal and side foot the ball past Cherrie.

With five minutes remaining Rovers secured victory when Sean McKenna who had earlier replaced Greg Kane got on the end of a Weir through ball and placed a calmly struck low twenty yard shot wide of the keeper into the bottom left corner of the net.
