Match Report

Rovers travelled to Aberdeen to face Glentanar FC in the Scottish Cup and for the most part continued to follow a recent trend of making life difficult for themselves by creating numerous goal scoring chances but finding it hard to convert these into goals.

Carluke enjoyed early domination of ball possession and should have opened the scoring after 10 minutes when Biggart set Lafferty clean through on goal with a slide rule pass only to be unbalanced by a shirt pull as he ran into the box and half hit his shot into the keepers hands.

Two minutes later a Grierson cross from the right found Lafferty at the back post who looked certain to score only for the keeper to dive full stretch to parry his shot round the post.

From the resultant corner Rovers centre back Dominic Chedu headed just over the bar.

This was followed by a McKenna strike from 20 yards which was saved by the keeper then immediately followed by a Lafferty goal bound shot which rebounded off the keepers legs.

Rovers frustrations in front of goal were relieved after 30 mins of almost constant pressure when Cassidy picked the ball up in his own half and went on a mazy run beating 4 players before laying the ball off to Lafferty who made no mistake with a superb close range curling left foot shot.

Glentanar then stunned Rovers with an equaliser on the stroke of halftime when the game was halted following a blood stoppage to Rovers Keeper Cherrie as he punched the ball clear from a corner and received an arm across his face for his efforts.

The Ref restarted the game with a drop ball on the 18 yd line and Rovers fully expected the ball to be played back to them, however the home side showed no sporting integrity and as the ball broke straight to their striker his right foot strike slid into the net.

Half Time 1-1

At the start of the second half Rovers brought on Greg Kane for McGoldrick and he immediately set up McKenna on the front edge of the box who’s 20yd shot came off the keepers legs. This was followed in by Lafferty who’s effort was also blocked by the keepers legs.

With Rovers frustrations building into the 80th minute skipper James McAllister cleverly intercepted a pass inside the centre circle.

He ran 10 yards and unleashed a 40yard rocket of a shot which sailed into the postage stamp corner of the net much to the audible relief of the Rovers entourage.

The game ended in style in injury time when Haley outstripped the left back and crossed to Kane all alone standing on the penalty spot who neatly side footed his shot into the back of the net.
