Match Report

In front of forty faithful fans a rugged and rampant Rovers ran riot over a visiting Irvine Vics side in the West of Scotland Cup.

From kick off Carluke displayed an attacking urgency and rarely gave their opponents time or space to settle on the ball forcing them into repeated panicked clearances and errors and after a mere 3 minutes Rovers should have scored when Connor McDonald flashed a first time shot inches wide of the back post following good work from a deep Biggart cross delivered down the left flank.

In the 7th minute Rovers opened the scoring when young Ross McNeil was first to react to a slack back pass as he sprinted onto the ball and unleash a rocket of a shot high into the net from close range.

Rovers went two ahead in the 20th minute when Eddie Haley was hacked from behind as he turned on the penalty spot with Mark Weir making no mistake from the penalty spot.

Just before half time Rovers looked to have gone three ahead when Lafferty headed home a viscous McNeil right wing cross at the back post but was adjudged to have drifted offside.

Half Time Rovers 2 Irvine Vics 0

Three minutes into the second half and Rovers went three ahead when a long Fitzpatrick throw from the right was head flicked on to Grierson at the back post who headed the ball across the face of the goal to Haley who headed the ball into the top corner of the net.

The pace of Haley caused Vics no end of problems all afternoon and it was no surprise when after 55 minutes he was bundled to the ground inside the box with Grierson slotting home the rebounded penalty after Weir struck the left hand post.

Rovers fifth goal came from a peach of a strike from 35 yards when Fitzpatrick ran straight at Vics defence from midfield and unleashed a Brazilian esq low swerving shot which outfoxed the keeper and hit the lower left corner of the net.

With ten minutes remaining the ever industrious Haley deservedly scored his second of the afternoon after McNeil fired in a visciously paced cross from the right wing which was fired home at the back post.

With the game out of Vics sight after eighty five minutes and Rovers completely switched off the visitors scored two late consolation goals.
