Match Report

Rovers travelled to Forth Wanderers Kingshill Park to play their first sectional league cup match against a new look Newmains Utd side.

From kick off Rovers looked to immediately pressure the Newmains goal with a strong wind at their back and surprisingly it wasn’t until the 20th minute when they created a clear scoring chance when Craig Grierson darted town the right wing and crossed for Sean McKenna only to see his half hit shot comfortably gathered by keeper Bruce.

Rovers looked to build some creative momentum from midfield but looked lethargic and wasteful in possession and became frustrated with play breaking down after two or three passes.

On the half hour mark another Grierson run and cut in to the front edge of the box saw him chopped down with the resultant free kick from McKenna bringing out a fine low diving save from keeper Bruce.

The Carluke defence and goalkeeper were virtual spectators during the last 15 minutes of the first half which ended 0-0.

Rovers made two substitutions at the interval with Kane and Tracey replaced by McAllister and Haley and with Cassidy and McKenna dropping deeper into midfield Rovers started creating attacking moves down the flanks.

On 60 minutes a neat midfield one two between Cassidy and McKenna sent Peter Byrne on a run from inside right into the Newmains penalty box.

Byrne kept his composure to sidestep a tackle then neatly side foot the ball home with his left foot from 8 yards.

From the restart Rovers sensed a second goal was at hand and some slick passing on the edge of the Newmains box which was the only sweeping move of the entire game allowed Grierson to burst through and fire a right foot volley off the post.

Full time Newmains Utd 0 Carluke Rovers 1.
