Match Report

Rovers came out of the traps flying in this league match and caused Cambuslang Rangers problems from the off, it took only two minutes for Carluke to carve out their first opening when Mark Haddow and Dean Kindlan combined to set Ian Watt free on goal but his weak shot was easily saved by the Rangers keeper.

With 6 mins played Gordon Murphy and Watt linked up to set Haddow up for a shot on goal from distance but the effort sailed over the bar for a goal kick, Rovers were well on top at this point and forced a series of corners first from a Stevie Murray effort that was forced wide, this gave Davy Gray a chance for a header on goal that was put over for another corner that saw Murray head just over.

Darren Hamilton was next to have an effort on the Rangers goal when he was set free but his low effort was well saved, the pressure was building on Cambuslang and the home crowd expected a breakthrough for Rovers and this came in the 19th min when kindlan was set free on the right and his excellent ball across goal was met by Gray at the back post and he struck the ball home from close range for 1-0 to the home side.

This goal for the Rovers got a reaction from Cambuslang as they were spurred in to action and they almost drew right away when they were allowed too much time on the edge of the Rovers box and a low shot beat Craig Brown in the Rovers goal before hitting the post and going across goal before being cleared, the match then flowed from end to end with Rovers having a Haddow header cleared off the line then a Mark Weir run ended with a low shot that went just past the post.

Rovers thought they had gone 2-0 up in 40 mins when Craig Stark found himself in space in front of goal but when he laid the ball to Murphy to put in the net he was probably correctly adjudged to be in an off side position and the strike did not count.

As the half wore on a few strange decisions from the referee ended with a soft free kick awarded much to his consternation against Haddow in the 2nd min of stoppage time at the end of the half and this was put wide of Brown with an excellent strike which ended the half and gave a sore of 1-1 at half time.

The second half saw a slower start by the home side and they fell behind to a goal in the 58th min when the same Cambuslang player put another free kick high in to the postage stamp corner of the net to put the visitors 2-1 ahead.

Rovers looked a poor side at this point and could not find any headway in the match for most of the half but as they went in to the last 15 mins they eventually got their game together and started to cause the Rangers defence a few problems, firstly Watt put in a good ball for Murphy but his header was just past the post then as the carried this momentum on they won a free kick well in to the Rangers half which when swung in saw a stramash in the Cambuslang defence before sub Greg Cavanagh bundled the ball home from close range to make the score 2-2after 79 mins.

Rovers took heart from this and there looked as if there should only be one winner of the match and what turned out to be the winning goal came in the 81st min when Rovers won a corner on the right which was swung in by Watt, the ball went low across the goal before Haddow met it at the back post and hammered the ball home for 3-2 to the home side.

Both sides had half chances before the end of the match but the score stayed the same a result that took Rovers back to the top of the table.
