Our resident Website Administrator, Kevin Ramage interviews the Rovers match secretary, Garry Simpson. In a light hearted interview Garry shares his views on some hot topics that the punters would like to know.

KRamage50
Garry, when did you join the club and what got you interested in coming along to join the mighty Rovers?
GSimpson50
I joined the committee when I was 16yrs old so 24 years ago , I had started watching Carluke after my friend Stuart invited me along to see his fav team wishaw play the rovers in an end of season league match & Carluke won that day , the following season I went along to watch Carluke & I was invited to help out on the committee by Clara .

KRamage50
Your current role at the club is Match Secreatary, for those not in the know what is a match secretarys responsibility within the club?
GSimpson50
My main job is to fill out the team lines on a match day & keeping track of all the cautions, player penalty points , suspensions & any fines etc.

KRamage50
Having been at the club so long what changes have you seen, good & bad?
GSimpson50
Moving to the new park was good but was also a sad day to leave loch park staduim behind & now we need to work even harder behind the scenes to make money to pay for it .
One of the best things to happen to the club was bringing Mr Black on to the committiee as chairman , he has helped give the club a new lease of life & a more stable future.

KRamage50
You will have seen many a high and low at the club the the years can you share some of these?
GSimpson50
I would still say the best high was travelling to face Scottish junior cup holders & Ayrshire top dogs Glenafton who at the time were managed by ex Scotland ledgend Alan rough in the first round of the west of Scotland cup which we won 1-0, also the season we beat coltness 10-0 home & away was a good feeling.
The worst day was travelling to play Kilwinning where we left on the end of a 10-0 defeat.

KRamage50
The club seems to be moving in the right direction on and off the field. Is there anything you would like to see happening at the club that isn’t at the moment?
GSimpson50
Yes we are improving the club every season but it takes time & money so it would be nice if we could get more people to help with fundraising & running events or just helping sell the clubs lottery tickets.

KRamage50
Through your years of watching the Rovers, who do you think has been the best player to grace a Rovers jersey?
GSimpson50
Hard to pick just one player, there have been some great stars that I have seen at the club, I was here when rangers star lee McCulloch played for the rovers & I remember the greats of Andy Barr, Gregg McFarlane & Peter MacFarlane but we have some real stars at the moment with Weir,Haddow & the legend Arnott.

KRamage50
You seem to like the odd tattoo here and there around your body, where is the Rovers one?
GSimpson50
Not got one, my tattooist does not do football tattoos but you never know maybe one day.

KRamage50
Running the lines on a Saturday is obviously crucial to your fitness regime and we understand the need for you to run up and down that line, so the photographers would like to know where did you learn that knack of getting in the way of photographers? 🙂
GSimpson50
Ok do I look like I have a fitness regime & when have you ever seen me run, I have been club linesman for many years & we never had photographers until recently so I just do what I have always done so sorry if I get in your way, anyway it would take me the duration of the match to get around Bernie.

KRamage50
Anything else you’d like to say to as we continue into the new season?
GSimpson50
I would like to wish the whole team & management good luck, they have the ability to do well this season & I’m sure they will.

A big thanks to Gary for taking the time out to answer our questions.
