Match Report

Rovers opened their league campaign at home against Ashfield Jnrs on Saturday and showed their attacking intent from kick off when in the fifth minute McKenna found Byrne on the right wing who’s cross come shot hit the top of the bar.

The visitors shrugged off their nervy looking start in the ninth minute winning a free kick 30yards from goal which flew inches past the keepers right hand post.

Carluke kept possession of the ball and patiently looked to build from midfield and in the 12th minute winger Craig Grierson had the Ashfield keeper scrambling down to his right hand post when he fired in a speculative shot from 25yards.

Rovers looked to be getting on top of their opponents with the pace of striker Eddie Halley beginning to show and he was unfortunate not to get on the end of a couple of finely though slightly over hit threaded passes from McKenna.

On 16 minutes Halley looked to be clean through on goal and had his legs taken from him as he turned on the edge of the 18yard box.

McKenna fired the free kick straight into the hands of the keeper who released a quick upfield kick which put Ashfield on the attack resulting in Carlukes Drew Lindsay giving away a needless free kick on the left edge of the box.

The free kick was flighted towards the back post and onto the head of Keegan Parker who’s point blank header was turned round the post by Rovers keeper Ryan Tweedlie.

The visitors undeservedly and luckily opened the scoring after 33 minutes when a speculative low shot came off the foot of Reece Lowdon and trundled into the net as he ran back to goal.

The visitors went two ahead just before half time when a Parker cross from the right wing was curled towards the back post and headed home from 3 yards by their centre forward with the Rovers keeper rooted to his line.

Half time – Carluke Rovers 0 Ashfield 2

From the restart Carluke looked to push forward at every opportunity and just couldn’t find a way through or round a tight and compact Ashfield defence.

On 67 minutes a Rovers attack broke down at the edge of the Ashfield box and having pushed a high line to the centre circle were caught with a swift counter attack as Parker was played clean through following a neat triangular passing move which allowed him to run in on goal and side foot the ball low into the right corner of the Rovers net.

Even at 3 – nil down Rovers never gave up with Grierson cutting in from the right wing on two occasions only to be chopped down at the edge of the box.

Consecutive free kicks were wasted by Biggart then McKenna as their kicks never threatened the Ashfield goal.

A miserable afternoon ended with Rovers conceding a fourth goal five minutes from time when a stretched defence allowed a Parker to shoot from 12 yards high into net.
